Recently, both official website of Panerai and VS factory promoted watch of PAM616 simultaneously, carbon graving case makes people feel magnanimous and striking. But I believe many friends will doubt that: what kind of material of carbon fibre case and carbon fibre? What they are? Something like luxury?? (laughing), carbon fibre is a real material. But carbon fibre only applied in military and commerce inclusively, hence we are strange to this kind of material, but with continuous breakthrough in technology and continuous decrease of cost, I believe it will apply carbon fire inclusively in following life, now there are part of million-level racing bicycles equipped with wheel frame by carbon fibre, bicycle’s body also made up by carbon fibre, racket of badminton also is made by carbon fibre frame,hence carbon fibre appearing in our daily life more and more frequently.

VS PAM616 what we can buy now is processed from this kind of black thing, which called carobon fibre blanks. VS factory needs to customize blanks of PAM616 grain from upstream carbon fibre supplier in large batch for processing.
Engineers will draw blue print in computer, and lead blueprint into CNC machine and consolidate carbon fibre in mould, then CNC machine processes complete banks into our needed member. If you are first time to watch processing process of CNC machine, you will be amazed about advancement of industrial equipment, you will understand industrial equipment can replace many labor forces, and standard of artificial processing is not good than machine’s.
There insert a small topic is some friends has mentioned that it will be better to use 3D print technique. But 3D print technique is at theoretical phase currently, its accuracy cannot reach material’s limitation. Currently, mainstream of domestic manufacturing is subject to CNC machine processing.
Due to machine’s window is sealed when it used for processing, hence in order to make everyone can see change of blanks clearly, it will stop and take out a sample when check it at interval of 15 minutes. I will take pictures to ley you have a look and relive your curiosity.
Current CNC machine don’t need artificial intervene from starting work to finish, it will change different cutter and angle automatically. Originally, I would to take a complete set of CNC machine to make you have a look, but factory don’t allow it. Five-axis CNC of Germany DMG is about 300, 000 RMB for one set. You can understand it on internet if you are interested in it.

This is blank processed for 30 minutes. CNC machine has processed compete outline of case. Lean side becomes more smooth and not too rough any more.
This is blank processed for 45 minutes. Coper location has processed out, ear hole of watchbelt has made up. CNC is marvellous, which can make up for a once completely.
These dense of stuffs put in ground is cutters which used in CNC machine. It needs to install nine different cutters in CNC if it needs to process case of PAM616.
The sharp cutter is not practical comparing with carbon fibre material. It needs to exchange cutter after processed ten cases (it will need to exchange when processed several decade cases). above image is renewal cutter with large consumption. Cutter’s consumption is high, processing time of CNC is long, high rate of invalidation of processing process, hence, production cost fees of VS PAM616 is very high, even higher than the same industry. So why?
Actually, it can decrease much production cost if it sets CNC’s processing speed more quick and shorten processing time. They why not decrease it” once speed-up, the processed case will be very rough, unique grain of carbon fibre cannot display out, and case body has many collapse holes. You can aware those version of former sold PAM616, you will find that case body is rough and many light small collapse hole. Slow work will make up elegant product, slow work also added much invisible cost. But you can find real difference if you have compared.

Before writing this article, may be we are like about why Panerai uses carbon fibre to make up watch, the more we reminded is well-known merit of carbon fibre, like light weight of carbon fibre, favorable heat conductivity performance and corrosion resistance.
After shoot these component of PAM616 cases, with deep and light understanding to them, I have new finding and understanding. The unique grain beauty of carbon fibre cannot be made by other materials. Maybe that’s the main reason why it uses this kind of material to make watch, my personal opinion.
Let’s talk about light weight of carbon fibre material, actually speaking, that is light material.

What is steel inner cover? We call above steel structure of case of carbon fibre is steel inner cover. Carbon fibre and carbon fibre component can be combined by steel inner cover, then it can realize effect of waterproof, structure is consistent with certified products, please don’t worry. Steel inner cover of VS is very elegant and strict.
Adhesive tape of VS PAM616 adopts natural rubber material, its weight will heavier than normal plastic tape. You can use this method to differentiate rubber tape and plastic tape from weight. Although this is an indigenous method, which is not accurate mat be, it can be regarded as reference and cannot for judging.
The whole weight of VS PAM616 is 136.6g, its weight is very close to certified products. As a watch with 47mm, I think this weight is exactly. You won’t feel heavy when you wear it, and you can feel its existence as well, everything is exactly.
During process of many friends wearing in daily life, or during process of watch est, it will find scratch in case, at this moment, everyone will feel heart-breaking.
In order to share a small skill with you, I rubbed VS PAM616 on meter for several times, you can see the above picture has scratch on coper. Actually, it is metal powder in carbon fibre material. You can rub it by some damp clothes, then you can swipe it out. Using thin sandpaper or brushed rubber to rub it can clean up. VS PAM441 is ceramic material and available in this method. (kindly reminder: watch is accurate machine, please love and protect your favorite watch. Don’t test it casually in daily life. It will need repair fees if you broke case or make hole collapsed)
Scratch will be disappeared rubbing by brushed rubber.
Fire resistance of carbon fibre is every good. I burned it for ten seconds due to I am very free, but it has no response, after burned for 15 seconds, gloves close to be burned up. But it won’t be fired still, without phenomenon of burning. Experiment has danger, it is suggested that don’t to have a try, satisfy your curiosity is enough.
Panerai was born with military watch manufacturing, hence case should stands corrosion of seawater. Added large spoons of salt must taste salt than seawater. Immersing blanks for two to three days.
After immersed in salt water, material has no change. It feels like eaglewood and it won’t become putrid in several hundred years if buried it in riverbed.
